The purpose of this website will be to give an overview of the Refugee Act of 1980. This will be done by providing users with information on how and why the law was passed using a series of documents found in the Endres Collection. The Endres Collection contains legislative notes, bills, newspaper articles and documents donated by Arthur P. “Skip” Endres to the Center for Migration Studies. Specifically, the website will focus on the theme of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, by collecting documentation of how these refugees, and the US, realized these aspirations.
This website will focus primarily on documents collected in the year 1979, the year prior to the passing of the Refugee Act as well as documents archived in 1980. These documents will show the arguments presented by many political figures in the United States outlining why this law needed to be instated. They will also show maps of areas in need of assistance such as Indo-China and notes and reports taken during legislative meetings.
The documents used will provide information to the general public as well as researchers, helping those who wish to learn more on the Refugee Act of 1980. The website will help users understand the history behind the act as well as providing a look at the legislative process of a bill becoming a law.
